The project aims to demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the novel scaling behaviours of hierarchical designs for load-bearing structural elements.
The work will involve writing code to algorithmically generate the geometries, which will then be additively manufactured and tested by partner organization(s). We will also work on advancing the theoretical understanding of the relation between robustness and efficiency of fractal geometries. Thus, as well as knowledge of coding and an appreciation of fractal geometric concepts, the candidate could benefit from familiarity with mechanics.
The London Institute (www.lims.ac.uk) is Britain’s first private institute for physics and mathematics research. It attracts the best scientists from inside and outside the UK and gives them the freedom and support to do what they do best: make fundamental discoveries.
