Post-Doc Position in Experimental Cold Atom Physics
A post-doc position is offered at the Cold Atom Physics Lab of the University of Liège, Belgium to start as soon as possible. The position is available to a candidate with strong research background in experimental cold atom physics and experience with magneto-optical traps.
The position is open in the framework of a project aimed at studying magneto-optically trapped iron atoms - a totally innovative atomic species in cold atom physics. Iron atoms are highly dipolar and as such provide an interesting candidate for investigating fascinating physics such as quantum dipolar phases and quantum liquid crystal physics. Magneto-optical trapping of this atomic species has only very recently been demonstrated for the first time in our lab. Everything is innovative in this respect and plenty of experimental investigations are currently due. The post-doc position aims at taking part in these experiments and contributing to the regular improvement of the experimental setup. New ideas will also be welcomed. The post-doc will also be expected to contribute towards the long term goals of producing a first Bose-Einstein condensate of iron atoms.
Our experiment for magneto-optically trapping iron makes use of two laser systems in the near UV produced by a frequency doubled Ti:Sa laser as well as a diode laser, both locked on an absorption line generated in an iodine cell and a hollow cathode, respectively.
Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in atomic physics or a related field. To apply, please send a CV along with 2 letters of recommendation to:
