摘要:

Postdoctoral position in Yeast Molecular biology : Gothenburg, Sweden

Information about the division
The Postdoc position will be associated with the Division of Industrial Biotechnology within the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. Industrial biotechnology is a young, dynamic and international group of researchers established in 2008 and counts now 30 members. The common denominator of the research activities in the group is to optimize the use of renewable raw materials for the sustainable production of fuels, chemicals and materials also within the main concept of biorefinery. The research performed within the group spans from fundamental research, technology development and lab-scale application: this ensures deep knowledge of the studied systems, leading to rational development and optimization of the respective applications. The research fields include production of biofuels and chemicals via fermentation and enzymatic refining of biomass, bioelectrochemical systems and algal biotechnology.

The Postdoc position available is part of a project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten). The overall goal of the project is to develop robust, xylose-fermenting yeast strains for large-scale production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic materials. For this purpose, natural xylose fermenting yeasts will be studied (with the aim of elucidating crucial physiological mechanisms of the xylose-assimilating pathway), and used as gene donors to improve the fermentation performance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Major responsibilities
The work will include cloning, genetic manipulations in both S. cerevisiae and non-conventional yeasts, RNA sequencing and bioinformatics as well as physiological studies and fermentation profiling.

The major responsibility as a Postdoc will be to perform research within the scope of the project and our group. The position may also include writing well-formulated project reports and scientific papers, and to a certain extent supervision of master and/or PhD students. Being part of our research group also involves some responsiblity for side tasks such as keeping the lab and instruments in good condition.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of one year.

Qualifications
All candidates must hold a doctoral degree, generally not older than three years, in Biotechnology/Bioengineering, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or other related disciplines. Experience in yeast genetics, molecular biology techniques, next generation sequencing (DNA and RNA) and bioinformatics is required. Know-how of metabolic engineering and genetic manipulations of non-conventional yeasts are qualifying merits.

The successful candidate will have an outstanding academic track record and have published first authored papers in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. Important qualities are enthusiasm, to be able to drive and conclude projects independently, take own initiatives and discuss/develop own ideas, be creative and have a problem-solving ability. The project is in collaboration with other researchers and thus excellent cooperation and social abilities are highly important. Good communication skills in English are necessary as English is the primary language in our laboratory. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers can offer Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
