Job Information

The Helmholtz-Centre of Ocean Research (GEOMAR) is one of the leading institutes in marine research in Germany. With 950 employees and a yearly budget of 70 Mio € its major goal is fundamental and applied research in all areas of marine sciences. For more information please visit www.geomar.de. Within the frame of a project funded by the excellence cluster “Future Ocean”, the GEOMAR, Research Unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry is offering a position for a

Post-doctoral Researcher in Analytical / Marine Natural Product Chemistry

 Job Description:

Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS) has increasingly been used in precise and unambiguous localization of natural products directly on intact tissue surfaces or microbial colonies and communities. When combined with other analytical techniques, such as metabolic profiling/metabolomics, IMS proves being a very useful and versatile tool applicable in drug discovery, chemical ecology, host-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions.

We are seeking a highly competent and motivated post-doctoral researcher with demonstrated expertise in marine natural product chemistry (dereplication, extraction, isolation and structure elucidation) and extensive skills in UPLC-QTOF-MS. The holder of this post will combine these skills with predominantly mass spectrometry-based chemical imaging (IMS) and metabolite profiling of natural products on the surface and inner tissues of marine organisms.

This is a collaborative project between GEOMAR and Kiel University and funded by the excellence cluster Future Ocean. The holder of the post will be employed at GEOMAR and will interact with several other research groups at both GEOMAR and Kiel University.

The Research Unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry (http://www.geomar.de/en/research/fb3/fb3-mn/) is part of the Research Division Marine Ecology of GEOMAR. It has state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with analytical/marine natural products chemistry facilities (UPLC-QTOF-MS-coupled with DESI-Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS, the related compound and spectral databases, accelerated solvent extraction system, FT-IR, polarimeter) as well as microbiology/biotechnology capacity and over 50 in vitro biological assays. The GEOMAR has full access to the Department of Chemistry and their high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities. We are members of the excellence clusters The Future Ocean, Kiel Life Sciences and several international consortia.

 Qualifications required:

• A PhD on marine natural product chemistry or a related field

• Extensive hands-on experience in LC-MS, preferably in UPLC-QTOF-MS for dereplication and secondary metabolite profiling

• Full competence in bioactivity-guided isolation and structure elucidation of marine natural products by LC-MS, 2D-NMR and other relevant techniques

• Experience in writing publications, conference papers and research proposals

• Fluency in spoken and written English and excellent oral and written communication skills

• Planning and organisational skills, prioritisation of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines

• Demonstrated project and laboratory management skills in multiple tasks

• Capability of creative- and critical thinking, independent thought and experimentation, decision making, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity

Previous experience on Imaging Mass Spectrometry and various classes of marine natural products is highly desirable.

This is a full-time position, starting 1st February 2016 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The position cannot be split. Funding is available for one year. The salary depends on qualification up to the class 13 TVÖD of the German salary rate for public employees.

Working language in the group is English. The GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages female scientists and scientists with disabilities to apply. Provided equal qualification, they will be preferentially considered.

Applicants will be evaluated based on the strength of their previous research experience and quality of their publication record.

Please send your applications containing 1. Your CV, 2. Contact information for three references, 3. A cover letter explaining interest in the position and career goals, no later than 11th January 2016 by e-mail in a single pdf-file to the personnel office Ms. Anna Lässig (E-mail: alaessig(at)geomar.de).

Please put keyword „Imaging-MN-Tasdemir“ in subject line of e-mail when submitting application.
