Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Cardiac Science : Oxford, United Kingdom

Applications are sought for a full-time postdoctoral research scientist. The successful applicant will join an active research team funded by a 5-year programme grant from the British Heart Foundation. The programme is directed by Professor Richard Vaughan-Jones and Associate Professor Pawel Swietach. Their laboratory is renowned internationally for its work on intracellular pH (pHi) regulation and signalling. The aim of the programme is to investigate the remodelling of ventricular pHi regulation, which occurs during maladaptive cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. The remodelling appears to facilitate disease progression. Manipulation of its underlying mechanism may therefore offer novel strategies for clinical treatment.

The Vaughan-Jones/Swietach laboratory is accommodated in the Burdon Sanderson Cardiac Science Centre, a purpose-built, multi-disciplinary Institute, within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Sherrington Building, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT. The postdoctoral research scientist will develop and implement selected research projects on pHi-regulatory remodelling in murine, rat or sheep ventricular myocytes, and its coupling to Ca2+ and transcriptional signalling in cardiac hypertrophy and failure.

The successful candidate must have a good first degree, and a PhD or equivalent qualification in an experimental biomedical science, plus a good working knowledge of written and spoken English. In addition, you should have a clear interest and knowledge of cardiac/cardiovascular cellular science, with enthusiasm for, and commitment to, cardiac research.

The post is funded by the British Heart Foundation and fixed-term for up to 5 years.
