Postdoctoral Research Associate
Job Description
A postdoctoral position is available within the South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute (STDOI) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The successful candidate will be responsible for the analytical component pertaining to the ocular genetics research program within the STDOI. Other duties include, but are not limited to: preparation of manuscripts for publication, present research findings at professional meetings. An objective of this research program is the identification of genes and gene networks influencing normal and disease-state ocular biology. Particular emphasis is placed on minority/global populations. Applicants must be about to graduate with a PhD degree in statistical genetics, molecular genetics, population genetics or similar field, or have graduated within the last 12 months. Demonstrated experience in family-based quantitative genetic linkage/association analyses of complex traits is essential. Experience with processing and analyzing NGS data sets is desirable. The successful candidate must work both independently and in a collaborative research environment, and have demonstrated oral and written communication skills. STDOI: The South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute (STDOI) was founded in October 2014 (Dr. Williams-Blangero: Founding Director) and it is the flagship research component for the new UTRGV Medical School. STDOI’s mission is to advance research of diabetes, obesity, and their associated complications; develop better treatments; and ultimately improve the health of residents in South Texas and beyond. The STDOI is an accomplished group of research scientists that has brought in more than $200 million in NIH funding over the past 14 years. UTRGV: The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that will combine the resources and assets of UT Brownsville, UT Pan American and the Regional Academic Health Center. This makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit, for the first time, from the Permanent University Fund, a public endowment contributing support to eligible institutions of The University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System. UTRGV also will be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in fall 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in fall 2016. |
