Ref. No. NUIG-084-15
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Dr. Elaine Dunleavy, Centre for Chromosome Biology (CCB) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This 4-year position (subject to one year probationary period) is funded by SFI and is available from 1st October 2015.
The Dunleavy Laboratory is an SFI-HRB-Wellcome Trust funded laboratory that studies fundamental cellular processes required for correct chromosome segregation during meiosis and mitosis, using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model developmental system. For more information see Dunleavy et al. 2012 PLoS Biology.
Job Description and Duties:
The successful candidate will contribute to a major aim of a recently funded SFI-PIYRA (President of Ireland Young Researcher Award) on the molecular mechanisms required for stem cell identity in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Experimental techniques to be performed will include: genetic manipulations with flies, molecular biology and cloning, protein purification and biochemistry, immuno-fluorescent microscopy and live imaging. Training and supervision of current and new lab members is also required.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences. Candidates must have an excellent track record in molecular and cell biology, as evidenced by publications. Experience with high-resolution microscopy and time-lapse imaging is highly desirable. Experience with the fruit fly model organism or a comparable genetic model system is also desired. Candidates should have excellent communication skills; be highly motivated and passionate about basic research; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
