The Research Data Manager will be responsible for helping HMS researchers develop a sustainable process for managing vast quantities of research data “Big Data”. The successful candidate will work with HMS labs to understand their data storage usage using existing and/or develop new reports and tools. This position will combine efforts of the HMS IT organization and HMS researchers to manage, classify and organize data, to ultimately improve the research process.

The Research Data Manager will have knowledge of research data lifecycle and associated experiments. Armed with this knowledge the position will apply hierarchical storage management (HSM) principles to identify the best storage platform for these data along the life of the dataset.

The ideal candidate has experience with scientific research data at scale, is familiar with Data Grid Management Systems (DGMS) such as Storage Resource Broker (SRB) or similar, excellent communication skills, a strong interest in Data Sciences with a focus on large-scale data management.

Harvard Medical School IT maintains over 20PB of storage across a variety of different platforms and storage tiers, including parallel file system high performance compute storage, general-purpose research storage, administrative data storage, and archive storage. The position will assist HMS IT in the creation of a sustainable process for moving data across these storage platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities

Storage Usage
- Help labs interpret data usage and classification metrics
- Provide an understanding of how to sustainably manage large scale data storage Archiving
- Work with researchers to classify existing data
- Develop processes to identify data to be archived
- Develop a process to archive identified data Data Lifecycle
- Apply HSM principles to data sets
- Map data type to storage platform
- Create automated methods for moving data between storage platforms and tiers New Technologies
- Keep abreast of new products and vendors
- Work with vendors to evaluate solutions
- Provide new product recommendations

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent professional experience and a minimum of 5 years data management/stewardship experience. Demonstrated experience with multiple large-scale (2PB to 10PB) storage systems. Demonstrated experience with data movement tools and scripting.

Additional Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the ability to create working partnerships with multiple researchers and lab managers; experience in life science research; commitment to customer service; ability to work in a demanding, fast paced environment; record of keeping abreast of industry trends and changes in technologies; strong organizational skills, communication skills (written, oral and presentation); a concern for accuracy, details and quality; strong interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize work and to be flexible in job tasks; proven analytical and problem-solving abilities; highly self-motivated and directed.
