Postdoctoral Fellow in plant genetics, genomics and molecular biology

Employer:  CSIRO
Job Number:  4015528 (Ref.#. ACT15/00093)
Date Posted:  01/27/2015
Application Deadline: 2/8/2015

Job Description

• Launch your research career at CSIRO
• Focus on world-class science
• Join our team at CSIRO - Australia's premier science & technology research organisation!

Postdoctoral Fellows at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

This post-doctoral position is available at CSIRO Plant Industry (Black Mountain, Canberra) as part of a GRDC-funded project on the fine-mapping of reproductive stage drought stress QTLs in wheat. The project will involve laboratory, greenhouse and field components, including wheat abiotic stress phenotyping (drought, heat and shading), SNP marker analysis and QTL mapping. Basic molecular biology skills and experience with real-time PCR, next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics are essential. Knowledge about wheat and abiotic stress physiology is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be independent, highly motivated, productive, and able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

Location: Black Mountain, Canberra, Australia
Salary: $81K to $88K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: 29 month term
Ref No.: ACT15/00093

To be considered you will have a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as plant genetics, genomics and molecular biology; and have demonstrated experience in QTL mapping using high-density SNP maps and strong statistical skills.

You will also have:
• Excellent understanding and preferably experience with new generation mapping technologies and molecular breeding in plants: association mapping, genotyping-by-sequencing, marker-assisted selection.
• Experience with RNA-seq (transcriptomics) data analysis and bioinformatics.
• Basic molecular biology skills (PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, sequencing, analysis of gene expression using real-time PCR).
• Demonstrated good judgement and ability to work reliably and independently; and as a member of a team.
• Demonstrated effective communication skills; and good organisational and time management skills.

Desirable Criteria:
• Good background knowledge about abiotic stress physiology and molecular biology.
• Knowledge about reproductive biology in cereals.

About CSIRO: Australia is founding its future on science and innovation. Its national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is a powerhouse of ideas, technologies and skills for building prosperity, growth, health and sustainability. It serves governments, industries, business and communities.

Applications close Sunday 8 February, 2015 (11:30pm AEDT)
