Department Description
The Structural and Thermal Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) supports a number of projects within the Nuclear Energy Safety Technologies Group. The department and group focuses on analyses and experiments aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the nation's energy systems and infrastructure, with particular emphasis on civilian nuclear power. The Group's primary customer is the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Group serves as the SNL point-of-contact for the NRC. Key technical areas for our NRC-sponsored work include severe accident modeling, security analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, human reliability analysis, fire protection, and experiments. The Group also works extensively with other Sandia organizations and with the Department of Energy in a variety of areas related to risk and reliability analysis, human reliability analysis, structural analysis and modeling, fire protection, nonproliferation applications such as nuclear fuel cycle transparency monitoring, and experimental programs requiring remote locations and unique facilities. Technical staff capabilities include nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineering, mathematics and statistics, computer science, project management, and regulatory compliance.

Job Description
Postdoctoral Appointee

Job Summary
The Structural and Thermal Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories has an opening for a postdoctoral appointee in the area of applied mathematics. Principal duties of this position involve model development, implementation, testing, and improvement to simulate physical processes in a probabilistic manner; improvement and implementation of sensitivity analysis techniques; development and implementation of methodologies to ensure sampled values remain in the physical domain; and preparation of clearly-written technical papers and reports. The successful candidate will enjoy working as part of a team of mathematicians and structural and mechanical analysts supporting high visibility programs for government agencies and international clients. This challenging and dynamic environment will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to leverage the professional experience of other team members to produce state-of-the-art, application focused tools and analyses to demonstrate safety. Some travel may be required. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance.

Required
Candidates for the postdoctoral position must have the following: (1) A recent PhD (conferred within the last five years) in applied or computational mathematics, engineering mechanics, mechanical engineering, or a related field. (2) Proficiency in scientific programming in C/C++, Fortran, Python, R, or Matlab. (3) In depth knowledge of probabilistic simulation, sampling techniques, uncertainty propagation and quantification, and sensitivity analysis. (4) Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

Desired
Ideally, postdoctoral candidates would also possess one or more of the following: (1) Research experience in one of the following areas: fracture mechanics, fatigue, materials aging and degradation, finite element analysis, constitutive modeling, or non-destructive evaluation. (2) Experience with nuclear power systems and fuel cycle facilities. (3) Experience in code development and analysis under a formal QA process. (4) Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
