Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher to work at the intersection of bioinformatics, epigenetics, immunology, and microbiology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The successful applicant will engage in discovering the mechanisms by which the intestinal microbiota alters the host epigenome and contributes to the onset and progression of metabolic disease. The research will utilize gnotobiotic mouse models as well as whole genome shotgun bisulfate sequencing of the immune cell populations responsible for the initiation and perpetuation of the chronic inflammation associated with obesity. This project is funded through a National Institutes of Health Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence grant establishing the Nebraska Center for the Prevention of Obesity Diseases through Dietary Molecules, a research center focused on understanding nutrition and obesity at the molecular level.

The successful candidate will be guided by a well-established interdisciplinary team of researchers (Drs. Ramer-Tait, J. Clarke, Moriyama, and Kachman) actively working on bioinformatics, microbial ecology, host genetics, dietary interventions, and host health (see gfi.unl.edu). Gnotobiotic mouse models to study the gut microbiota are established within our group. The successful candidate will be responsible for bisulfite sequencing and bioinformatics/statistical analyses to achieve the objectives of the research. The candidate will also be expected to participate in animal experiments and immune/metabolic phenotyping. The work will be conducted in a newly constructed laboratory located on the Nebraska Innovation Campus. Opportunities also exist to interface with the Computational Sciences Initiative (see bigdata.unl.edu), a university-wide initiative to develop research and educational opportunities in big data sciences.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. and a strong background in bioinformatics, biostatistics large-scale data analysis, and/or programming experience in a Linux/Unix environment. The ability to build new pipelines as needed is highly desired. A dual background in both computation and molecular biology and, in particular, immunology will be a strong plus. Competitive candidates will also have excellent communication skills and a good publication record.
