Further information

Salary range: £30,202 to £37,860per annum dependent on experience.

A unique exciting opportunity of postdoctoral fellowship is available in the laboratory of Dr. Kosuke Yusa to work on a joint project between the Sanger Institute and an industry partner.

This joint programme has recently been launched as a 3-year project to identify novel therapeutic targets to treat cancer and cardiometabolic diseases. The project involves the use of cutting-edge CRISPR functional genomics technology pioneered by Dr. Yusa, combined with industry-generated techniques and materials.

Activities will focus on the following two projects and we are now seeking highly motivated individuals who have knowledge and expertise relevant to the respective projects. For each project, one postdoctoral position is available. Please indicate which project you would like to work on in your cover letter.

1. Oncology - Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to cancer drugs as well as identifying synthetic lethal partners with genes commonly mutated in cancer.

2. Regenerative Medicine - Perform genome wide screening to identify genes that reprogram cardiac fibroblasts to cardiomyocytes.

The task of successful candidates will be developing and optimising respective genetic screening systems, performing screens and characterising gene hits to validate new therapeutic targets. You will be required to report progress on respective projects to the Joint Research Committee on a quarterly basis.

Successful candidates will be working in Dr. Kosuke Yusa's laboratory at the Sanger Institute and will have access to the Institute's state-of-the-art facilities and resources including high-throughput sequencing, cancer cell panels and mouse models.

Essential Skills

  • PhD in a relevant subject area
  • Proven molecular biology skills, including: molecular cloning, vector construction, site-specific mutagenesis, reverse transcription, real-time PCR quantification, gene manipulation
  • Experience with cell culture, transfection, cell proliferation assays, cell migration and invasion assays, cell anchorage-independent growth assays, dual luciferase assay, flowcytometry and fluorescent microscopy
  • Experience in supervising and training other laboratory personnel in specialized techniques and presenting results at scientific conferences [posters and talks]
  • Proven ability to write scientific papers and achieve publication in internationally refereed journals

Ideal Skills

  • Interest, expertise and knowledge in developing genetic systems to explore the biological function in vertebrate model systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of research scientists with different skill sets and expertise

Other information

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. Successful applicants who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £27,748. On confirmation of the award of their PhD applicants will be moved on to the pay range above.

These positions are fixed-term for 3 years.
