The University of Queensland's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) is an integrated multi-disciplinary research institute bringing together the skills of world-class researchers working at the intersection of biology, chemistry, engineering and computer modelling. The institute has more than 450 researchers housed in a $AU75 million state-of-the-art building complimented by an extensive suite of facilities. This critical mass of researchers is working to develop new products and processes which will significantly impact human health, the environment, and the development of sustainable renewable energy. AIBN goes beyond basic research to promote and develop the growth of innovative industries, which will benefit the Queensland and Australian economies.

The systems and synthetic biology group uses experimental and computational tools to analyse and design complex biological systems for industrial purposes. The group works with leading biotech companies as well as multinationals across the world. The current project focuses on new ways of producing chemicals and aviation fuel from C1 gases in collaboration with LanzaTech.

The role
The successful appointee will work within the gas fermentation team on developing a new systems biology platform for acetogens and use it to identify energy limitations and develop new designs.

The person
Applicants should possess a PhD in molecular systems biology for fermentation system. You should have demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of fermentation and systems biology.

Remuneration
This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for three (3) years at Research Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $71,219 – $82,510 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $83,327 – $96,537 p.a.).
