NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB
The Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the development of scalable and robust algorithms for the simulation of suspended bodies through patient-specific vascular geometries with application to cancer research. The primary focus will be on the development of techniques to run massively parallel fluid-structure interaction simulations, which will involve designing data structures, domain decompositions, and communication optimizations to enable efficient scaling to greater than 100,000 cores. Project goals include enabling the simulation of large regions of the circulatory system at realistic hematocrit level, creation of a tight feedback loop between the model results and data obtained through in vitro experiments, and the development of algorithms to include a range of cell description parameters such as shape, size, and stiffness. Will work in a multidisciplinary team environment, interacting with scientists from LLNL as well as with outside collaborators. Will report to the Scientific Computing Group Leader within CASC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Design and implement robust and scalable coupling of fluid-structure interaction algorithms.
- Develop novel computational techniques and implement them in the HARVEY lattice Boltzmann simulation code to enable large-scale simulations.
- Establish a method to compare simulation results to in vitro measurements.
- Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in domestic and international conferences.
- Define and carry out the research in collaboration and interaction with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Conduct independent but complementary research interests.
- Contribute to group grant proposals, including both preparation and presentation of proposals that will provide future research opportunities in the field.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
