About ANSTO

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is home to Australia’s nuclear science and technical expertise. More than 1000 scientists, engineers and experts work at ANSTO and use nuclear science and technology to answer the big questions in the world around us – improving health outcomes, increasing our understanding of the environment and climate change and identifying new opportunities for Australian industry.

We operate much of our country’s landmark science facilities including one of the world’s most modern nuclear research reactors (OPAL). Importantly, ANSTO is helping to improve our health with one in two Australians benefitting from the nuclear medicines produced using the OPAL research reactor while being treated for serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.

About the position

We are currently seeking a PhD graduate in chemistry or materials science to join the team of researchers in the Energy Materials research project to engage in neutron-scattering experiments and computational modelling to characterize and understand porous materials used for carbon dioxide separation, sequestration, and conversion. The successful Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will have solid communication and problem solving skills in order to perform experiments and data analysis. The Post-Doctoral position forms part of a large collaborative effort aimed at developing innovative ways to capture and transform carbon dioxide generated from the burning of fossil fuels. As such the successful candidate will be required to work effectively with cross-disciplinary teams from Australia’s top universities and research institutes.

Duties and responsibilities

• Conduct experimental and computational scientific research relevant to the Energy Materials research project.
• Deliver research outcomes.
• Take responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and development of scientific instrumentation techniques and processes used in this project.
• Publish outcomes of the research in high quality academic journals.

Skills and Experience

• Ph.D in chemistry, physical chemistry, or materials science, or related field, less than five years ago at the time of application
• Demonstrated experience using neutron scattering and materials crystal-structure and dynamics characterisation
• Computational calculations experience
• Experience with handling porous and air-sensitive materials

We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Fellow who has the scientific aptitude and communication skills to collaborate with external partners and publish research findings.
Dr Venessa K. Peterson
Principal Research and Neutron Instrument Scientist, Powder Diffraction
