Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Calcium Signaling and Cell Biology : Boston, MA, United States

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, independently carries out and designs sophisticated and independent experiments. Will work in laboratory space dedicated to principal investigator with additional potential to establish successful project-specific collaborations in the area of calcium signaling, ion channels and glomerular kidney disease.

Current cutting edge projects are focused on the role of calcium in the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton and cellular metabolism. Aberrant calcium signaling leading to a disrupted cytoskeleton or disrupted cellular metabolism has been linked to diabetes, neurologic disorders, heart disease, cancer, and kidney disease.

Our current efforts in the translational space are directed toward understanding the role of TRPC channels in proteinuric kidney disease. In our award-winning work, we recently showed that inhibition of TRPC5 channels protects the kidney filter. Using Trpc5 knockout mice, a small molecule inhibitor of TRPC5, calcium imaging in isolated kidney glomeruli, and live imagining of podocyte actin dynamics, we determined that loss of TRPC5 or its inhibition abrogates podocyte cytoskeletal remodeling. Thus, our work revealed that the Ca+2 permeable channel TRPC5 is an important determinant of the early events causing albuminuria, and TRPC5 inhibition is thus a novel therapeutic strategy for the prevention or treatment of proteinuric kidney diseases.

We are using the tools of molecular biology, cell biology, advanced imaging techniques, patch clamp electrophysiology and animal models to study the role of TRP channels in health and disease.

The successful candidate will have recently completed graduate studies in a PhD, MD or MD/PhD program with a strong research and publication record in the biological sciences, and background in cell biology. Experience working with mice is desirable. Patch clamp or calcium imaging experience is not required
