Description of research group and project
As a member of our team your primary task will be to investigate the role of proteins, peptides (neuropeptides) and other small molecules in pain signaling using mass spectrometry and to some extent also use molecular biological and immunohistochemical techniques. The aim is to understand the regulation of pain transmission, and delineate signaling pathways that are activated or deactivated in relation to persistent pain.

Work will be conducted in Dr. Camilla Svensson’s research group Molecular Pain Research, that has a focus on pain mechanisms in chronic inflammatory conditions utilizing preclinical model systems together with Dr Kim Kultima’s group at Uppsala University. At Uppsala University, (Dept. of Medical Sciences), in collaboration with Dept. of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology (Akademiska Sjukhuset, Uppsala), we have recently built a new mass spectrometry platform for targeting proteins and peptides using high-resolution instruments (Thermo Q-Exactive LC-MS/MS) that will be used for this task.

The ultimate goal is to identify new key pain mechanisms and potential drug targets for treatment of chronic pain states. The applicant will spend time both at Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University.

Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated candidate, with a completed PhD thesis and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate must have acquired expertise in the field of mass spectrometry, protein and peptide chemistry. To qualify, the candidate must possess experience within analytical techniques for separation, identification and quantification of proteins, peptides and other small molecules using nUHPLC and targeted mass spectrometry utilizing high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-SIM/PRM). A strong background in bioinformatics or molecular biotechnology, corresponding to an MSc engineering degree in bioinformatics, molecular biotechnology or similar is also meriting.

We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team-player to our group. You will be part of a team of various experts, so we are looking for individuals who excel at working independently and, at the same time have the interpersonal and communication skills to succeed at working in a multi-disciplinary team. Apart from mass spectrometry analyses, the candidate is expected to take part of other aspects of experimentation including in vivo and in vitro work as well as presentation and preparation of publications. Personal suitability and scientific expertise is highly valued. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written.

Entry requirements
Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying.

One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.

Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj )
A complete list of publications
A summary of current work (no more than one page)
Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system….
