Department Description
Biosystems Research & Development Department, located in Livermore, California, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy. We are an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research. Our goal is to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through advanced technology development and new research approaches. For example, we are one of the world-leaders in application of microfluidic technology for biochemical analysis. The department is highly multidisciplinary and is comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical and physical) and engineering (chemical, mechanical and bioengineering). Currently, we have ongoing projects in the areas of medical diagnostics, therapeutics screening, algal biofuels as well as basic research studies in immunology, cellular signaling, protein structure/function determination, proteomics, computational biology and microfluidics.

Job Description
JBEI Postdoctoral Sci/Eng

Job Summary
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management¿s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.

Primary Job Duties
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to perform research in application of microfluidics to chemical and biochemical analysis at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (www.jbei.org). The individual will work on a multi-disciplinary project involving analytical chemists, engineers and biologists to develop miniaturized devices and techniques applicable to bioenergy research. The research will involve design and fabrication of microfluidic devices, adapting assays to microfluidic format, and integration of chips with mass spectrometers. Specific applications include development of platforms for high throughput enzyme and metabolite assays and analysis of biomass constituents such as glycans.

Required
Recent Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical biochemistry, or engineering (chemical, mechanical or bio) is required. Extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: microfabrication of PDMS and glass chips, droplet microfluidics, mass spectrometry (e.g., MALDI-TOF), and fluorescence microscopy. A strong record of high technical achievement as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required.

Desired
Knowledge of basic biochemical techniques is also desired.

Security Clearance
No clearance required.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.

Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
