Job Description

• Excellent career development opportunity
• Structured postdoctoral training program
• Join CSIRO and engage with Australia's premier plant scientists

The position:

Postdoctoral Fellows at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

In this position you will develop wheat populations with deep root systems that confer an increase in water productivity in farming systems that experience drought, and will provide the phenotypic and genotypic selection tools to Breeders in India and Australia. The wheat lines that are sources of the deep roots were identified in Phase 1 of this project, through a collaboration across field sites in India and Australia. This role is an excellent opportunity for a post doctoral fellow to participate in an international collaboration in the important area of water productivity, and to apply pre-breeding activities to deliver root architecture traits into new varieties for farmers.

Specifically you will:

• Phenotype wheat populations for root architecture traits in controlled and field conditions and generate gene mapping populations and populations for breeders
• Identify and apply gene regions associated with root architecture traits to speed up population development
• Collaborate with Breeders in India and Australia to meet the objective of delivering into their breeding programs root architecture traits that increase water productivity

Location: Black Mountain (Canberra), Australia
Salary: AUD81K - AUD88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation (Pension Fund)
Tenure: 3 year term
Ref No.: ACT14/01479

To be considered you will hold a Doctorate in Plant Science. You will also need to be willing to travel to India and collaborate extensively with Indian partners.

You will also have:

• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with phenotyping root traits or other complex physiological traits
• Demonstrated experience in identifying gene regions associated with phenotypes to carry out marker assisted breeding
• Demonstrated experience in molecular biology techniques
• Demonstrated experience in growing and maintaining large plant populations
• Demonstrated personality and skills to supervise a technical officer and PhD student
Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant Postdoctoral experience.
