Post Doctorate RA - Surface Science in RICHLAND Washington United States

Organization and Job ID : Job ID: 303501 Directorate: Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory Group: Microscopy .

Job Description : Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral position in the area of fundamental investigations of physics and chemistry related to visible light photoactivity on the complex oxide surfaces by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and related surface science methods. The specific area of research is flexible, but will be related to the previous efforts in this direction. The research, funded by the US DOE Office of Science, focuses on the photochemistry of probe molecules (e.g., NO, O2, TMAA) on the epitaxial films of ternary oxides (e.g., ferrites and mixed ferrites-chromites), whose optical spectra are well suited for visible light photochemistry. The broad scientific goals include gaining a molecular level understanding and the mechanistic detailing of the photocatalytical processes on complex oxide surfaces, including fundamental questions of specific surface reaction sites, effect of surface structure, and interplay between thermal and non-thermal processes. The research will involve a close collaboration with other experimental (material synthesis, surface chemistry), and theoretical (DFT calculations) groups. Successful candidate will be expected to grow the corresponding films by MBE and conduct research using variable temperature and low temperature ultra-high vacuum STM/NC AFM (both Omicron) and other in-situ surface sensitive techniques (XPS, UPS, AES, ISS, and LEED) to determine the associated structural, electronic and photochemical properties, as well as write first drafts of related publications. .

Minimum Requirements : Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university. All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States. .

Qualifications : Candidates must have extensive experience in the UHV surface science instrumentation, especially STM. A good background in thin solid film formation and surface chemistry and physics is desirable. Work is conducted at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (DOE national user facility located at PNNL). Start date is flexible (as early as October, 2014).

For more information, contact Dr. James Evans (james.evans@pnnl.gov) or Dr. Scott Lea (scott.lea@pnnl.gov). .

Equal Employment Opportunity : Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital or family status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information. All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States. .

About Tri-Cities : http://www.visittri-cities.com/

The Tri-Cities started out with 3 main communities: Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland - but the phenomenal growth of neighboring West Richland has made the area more of a "Quad-City". Located just hours from Seattle, WA and Portland, OR, the area is embraced by the beauty of a desert landscape and connected by the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers. The Tri-Cities offers a multitude of recreational, cultural, and historical activities and is a great place to visit and live. We're known for our premier golf courses, award-winning wineries, unique shopping, and abundant outdoor and water recreation. Click on the link above to learn more about the various communities. PNNL is located in Richland, WA. .
