Postdoctoral Research Associate - Mechanism of Iminosugars as Antivirals

University of Oxford -Department of Biochemistry

Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £29,837 - £36,661 p.a.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate the mechanism of action and structure-activity relationships of Iminosugars (monosaccharide mimics) as antivirals. The overall goal of the project is to design, synthesise and test novel compounds to demonstrate which features are obligatory and favourable for the desired antiviral activities. The postholder will be expected to develop and carry out synthetic routes to obtain the target compounds, as well as test them in vitro.

Applicants should possess, or expect to obtain soon, a PhD in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field. Applicants must have experience in synthetic chemistry, enzymology, virology and cell culture techniques. Familiarity of working under containment level 3 conditions, particularly working with hepatitis C, dengue virus and/or HIV, is highly desirable. We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with a track record who can work independently and in collaboration with other members of the group. Owing to the interdisciplinary nature of the group, familiarity with peptide synthesis, biophysical and structural techniques will also be viewed as beneficial.

This full-time post is funded by the Oxford Endowment Fund for up to 3 years in the first instance and is based at the Oxford Glycobiology Institute, South Parks Road, Oxford.

The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.

For further general information, phone 01865 613204, quoting reference number BR/602.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Friday 25 April 2014, with interviews for shortlisted candidates as soon as possible thereafter.
