Ref: STM0151
Salary (£)57898 - 57898
Closing Date: 12 Aug 2010
The Role
The school wishes to appoint a Professor in the Biological Science section to work with the head of school, the director of research, and the team to further the international research reputation of the school.
The appointee will be expected to contribute to the collaborative research strategy of the school and to expand the local, national and international links with other HEI's, industry and other research groups as appropriate. It is anticipated that the person will either bring funding to the school or will be able to relatively quickly attract personal funding and also support others in the biological science team and across the school to develop funding proposals. It is expected that a significant amount of the funding will come from research councils in the UK and abroad (e.g. MRC, BBSRC, ESRC), as well as from industry and other sources. It is critical that the school establish a portfolio of continuous research income, and that a reasonable proportion of that is to come from the biological science team. It is important for the school to further develop the strong and successful group of PhD researchers, recognising that a number of them will graduate in the coming year. It is the objective of the school to expand the number of PhD students to 40 and to have the majority of these funded from external sources.
The successful candidate will also have strong management and leadership capabilities together with excellent communication skills. They will also have an opportunity to contribute to the design of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as being actively involved in teaching.
The Person
The successful candidate will have a PhD and a record of research of international standard in a relevant biological science discipline relating to cell or molecular biology.
A track record of successful grant applications and managing funded awards, a sustained track record of national and international research publications and experience of PhD supervision through to completion, with experience of PhD examining is essential. A demonstrated commitment to collaborative research and teamworking will be required, as will experience as a senior academic operating at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including teaching at these levels. Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead, develop and motivate research staff and the ability to operate at an appropriate strategic level, to solve problems and achieve challenging deadlines will be key.
The School
The Medway School of Pharmacy is a unique collaboration between the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent. The school is located at the heart of the new multi-university campus development at Chatham Maritime in Medway, Kent. This splendid Edwardian redbrick campus - dating from 1903 - has benefited from over £20 million capital investment since 1996. Extensive new laboratories and research facilities have opened and the campus has developed into a major higher education centre. A local shortage of qualified pharmacists resulted in both universities, supported by a professional liaison group, gaining approval to start the first cohort of Master of Pharmacy students in September 2004. These students successfully graduated in July 2008 and the school is now fully accredited and recognised as an established school of pharmacy. There are currently approximately 650 undergraduates and 150 (FTE) postgraduates studying at the school.

Further details about each individual's research interests can be found at the following web address: http://www.msp.ac.uk/research/biological-sciences.html
We have developed strong collaborative links with other academic departments at Kent and Greenwich and with local industry (e.g. Pfizer, Charles River). We are also closely involved in the University of Kent's new Centre for Molecular Processing: http://www.kent.ac.uk/stms/cmp/index.html
