JOB SUMMARY

The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in connected and automated vehicles and data analytics. The CTSRC is part of the Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) which is comprised of three research centers, the Technical Assistance and Training Center, the Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory, and CTSRC. The Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) was established at the University of Connecticut in 1974, and operates within the School of Engineering. CTI's mission is to conduct integrated multidisciplinary research, education, and related services that promote safety and efficiency in multi-modal passenger and freight transportation systems and, in turn, enhance livable communities, sustainable economies and the environment. CTI brings together a critical mass of transportation faculty and research talent at the University of Connecticut, the top public research institution in New England.

The successful candidate will support a vibrant federal-, state- and industry- funded research program and assist faculty and staff in pursuing traditional and non-traditional external funding sources. Candidates will be expected to work with UConn's full scale driving simulator and future Connected and Automated Vehicle development tools to advance the Center's knowledge for addressing fundamental challenges in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) with respect to Transportation and Civil Engineering.

The candidate is expected to support CTSRC staff on creative and innovative multidisciplinary research projects which benefits owners, operators, decision-makers, and the traveling public. The candidate should demonstrate the potential to support current faculty and staff in related areas at CTI.

The candidate should have research expertise in at least one of the following areas:

Future of Mobility - The concepts of mobility on demand and mobility as a service along with connected and automated vehicles will revolutionize our transportation system. The impacts and mechanics of these technological advances will change the way we travel and introduce significant challenges of safety, sustainability, and equity. These advances include connected vehicles, automated vehicles, autonomous vehicles, automated data collection, remote sensing, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

Connected Infrastructure - The integration of sensors and communications devices with civil infrastructure provides unlimited opportunities to enhance the efficiency and safety of our transportation system. These technologies would include connected and automated vehicles, smart traffic signals, smart and connected cities, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, transportation asset data collection, and management practices.

Traveler Behavior Analysis - All movement of people results in an enormous amount of data being collected on an hourly or daily basis. Such data presents the opportunity to apply advanced processing methods and applications including AI and ML infused microsimulation-based approaches to model and analyze travel behavior, safety, and efficiency optimizations in real-time. This area would lead to AI and ML innovations in research in the areas of activity-based travel behavior, time use analysis, travel demand modeling and forecasting, transportation planning and policy analysis, integrated models of land use and transport, the convergence of traveler behavior, safety analysis, and econometric and statistical modeling.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  Work on two emerging projects on Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and crowd sourced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) GIS based applications

  Conduct studies of related literature to support research design and proposal development

  Work with other research staff to support the development of proposals and literature to help maintain funding to support this position in the future

  Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals

  Present research work at national and international scientific conferences and other appropriate settings

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  Completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related field by the time of appointment with a focus related to the future of mobility, connected and automated vehicles and infrastructure, or travel behavior analysis

  Proficiency in data processing and statistical analysis software such as R, Python, MS Excel, SAS, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  An undergraduate degree in civil or transportation engineering

  An outstanding record of research and scholarship excellence
