In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), our faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates to join the Sheng Shen lab at MechE. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, or subject area and may involve organizing and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. You will acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of your choosing. In this role you will work on metamaterials, metasurfaces, and plasmonics for photodetection, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal emission control.

Sheng Shen’s research interests include nanoscale thermal transport and energy conversion phenomena, and their applications in solar or thermal energy conversion, thermal management, and multifunctional materials. Professor Sheng Shen’s lab at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking hardworking postdoctoral fellows to work on engineered nanostructured materials for solar photocatalysis, photodetection, and infrared spectroscopy. In particular, we are searching for candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: nanomaterial synthesis, nanofabrication, nanodevice characterization, and optical characterization.

Core responsibilities include:

• Designing and fabricate nanostructures or nanodevices

• Test and characterize nanostructures or nanodevices

• Work with MS and undergraduate students in Professor Shen’s group

Qualifications:

• Doctorate degree

• Experimental experience such as nanofabrication and optical measurements preferred
