Postdoctoral position in Global Change and Biotic Interactions Ecology

This position is open in the UOulu, Ecology and Genetics Research Unit and funded by ‘Arctic Interactions and Global Change (ArcI)' – a scientific profile area of UOulu. ArcI promotes cross-faculty and multidisciplinary cooperation through recruitment and mobility programmes, seed money actions and science events. The ArcI postdoc programme will fund talented researchers from a variety of disciplines to strengthen the current community of Arctic researchers at UOulu. This open position will be linked especially to the ArcI theme 1: Global change and northern environments (https:// www. oulu.fi/arci).

Brief description of the project/position:

We (https: // eskelinenresearch.com/) seek a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral researcher to strengthen our team in the study of questions related to climate warming, nutrient enrichment, herbivory, traits, dispersal limitation, lowland species invasions to open tundra, and how these interact to affect diversity and productivity in herbaceous plant communities in grasslands and tundra. The research is partly based on global experimental Nutrient Network (https:// www. nutnet.org/), and the postdoc will lead an add- on study conducted at multiple Nutrient Network sites worldwide, and synthesize existing data. The work will be done in close collaboration with a large international researcher team and includes collaboration with Physiological Diversity Department, German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), and Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research UFZ, Leipzig, Germany, and there will be research visits to Leipzig.

Your profile/qualifications:

– PhD in community ecology or equivalent field with background in experimental biodiversity research (obtained within the past 10 years)

– Excellent written and spoken English

– Ability to travel and do field work

– Ability to work in an international team

– Excellent statistical skills (especially R) and ability to prepare high- impact manuscripts for international journals independently

– Good knowledge of plant-herbivore interactions, global change ecology and/or plant traits

Assessment of the applicants will be based on, acknowledging the content of the job, 1) overall fit to the above profile, 2) scientific publications, 3) motivation, 4) previous work experience, 5) national and international mobility and networking skills, and 5) other academic activities and merits.

The position is funded for two years. The salary will be based on the levels 5 – 6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The total salary for these levels (before tax) typically ranges from about 3 300 – 3 900 Euros/month for full-time employment depending on qualifications and performance.
