DescriptionPostdoctoral Employee - The Hsu Lab

The Hsu Lab (https:// hsu.berkeley.edu) in the Department of Bioengineering (https:// bioeng.berkeley.edu) and Innovative Genomics Institute (https: // innovativegenomics.org/) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the field of genome and protein engineering. Our research aims to understand and manipulate the genetic circuits that control brain and immune cell function to improve human health. We explore the rich biological diversity of nature to create new molecular technologies for genome and transcriptome engineering, perturb complex cellular processes at scale, and develop next-generation gene and cell therapies. To do this, our group draws from a palette of technologies including CRISPR-Cas, engineered viruses, genome sequencing, massively parallel reporter assays, and pooled genetic screens (Hsu Cell 2014, Tycko Molecular Cell 2016, Konermann Cell 2018, Zhang Cell 2018).

Appointment Length:

This is a full time position at 100% time for one year. The appointment may be renewed depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Duties of Position Included:

Will work in a team that is developing novel molecular technologies for genome engineering, therapeutics, and diagnostics. Some of the problems we are thinking about include new methods for genetic perturbations in high- throughput, editing of the postmitotic genome, therapeutic delivery at the neuro-immune interface. One major area of interest includes invention of genome editing modalities that bypass the need for endogenous DNA repair pathways, paving the way for more flexible gene therapies and functional genomics screens. Another effort involves a multi-laboratory collaboration to create sensitive CRISPR-assisted nucleic acid diagnostics for COVID-19. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in collaborative technology development, as this position involves multi-disciplinary work in molecular biology and protein biochemistry; cell biology; and genome biology/next- generation sequencing.

Minimum Basic Qualifications:

  Completion of all doctoral degree requirements except the dissertation at the time of application.Additional Qualifications (by start date):

  PhD degree or equivalent international degree

  The candidate may have no more than four years of post-degree research experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  Strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics (or related discipline)

  Experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, library-based approaches, and next-generation sequencing methodologies is preferred. Bioinformatics programming skills (e.g. BASH, Python, or R) is desirable, but not required.

Salary

$53,460 - $61,800 full time annual rate, depending on experience.
