Job Description

A postdoctoral positions funded by an American Heart Association Strategically Focused Research Network in Atrial Fibrillation is available July 1, 2020 in the laboratory of David R. Van Wagoner, Ph.D. in the Department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences, in the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Van Wagoner’s laboratory conducts cardiac arrhythmia research, with a focus on the mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF). Our laboratory has a translational focus, with projects that use human atrial tissues, and atrial cardiac myocytes and engineered heart tissues differentiated from patient blood cells. Our long-term goals are to identify key gene pathways that contribute to AF risk, and evaluate therapeutic interventions targeting the identified pathways that can reduce the burden of AF, thus lowering the risk of stroke and improving quality of life. We have a highly collaborative environment, working directly with a clinical electrophysiologist, a cell biologist and a bioinformatics expert. We also have collaborations with AF Strategically Focused Research Networks at other centers.

Our research seeks to clarify the relationships between genetic AF risk variants, metabolism, and cardiac maturation and aging, as well as the impact of metabolic changes on cardiac electrophysiology using state of the art equipment and approaches.

Preference will be given to creative candidates with cellular / in vitro electrophysiology expertise, and/or bioinformatics / computational expertise. We are looking for independent, self-motivated individuals with excellent verbal and written communication skills, who are able to function as a member of collaborative team. The fellow will have opportunities for multidisciplinary training, and will be expected to participate in and present at local and national AHA events and national scientific meetings. A PhD or MD/PhD in one of the biological sciences, bioinformatics or a related discipline is preferred. The Lerner Research Institute is home to a strong multi-disciplinary research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities, strong leadership and vision, and focus on research with a translational impact.
