  Job Description

  **Are you passionate about your research and dream of using state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join an inventive and dynamic team that tackles relevant challenges for atom-based sensors using unique solutions?** We are currently seeking exceptional individuals to pursue world-leading research in the development of the nanofiber-based guided atom interferometer and a compact, field-applicable atom interferometer with integrated photonics. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work with atomic physicists and optical engineers to successfully advance the science of atomic sensing technologies so they can be employed as a practical sensing mechanism by overcoming challenges in physics and engineering. + Support and advance the development of atom interferometer experiments through aligning optical systems, building experimental apparatus, developing computer-based experimental control and data acquisition system, collecting and analyzing experimental data, and developing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. + Collaborate with diverse-background experts to develop atomic sensor platforms.

  Required:

  + A PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field conferred within 5 years. + Experience with most of the following: atomic physics, diode/fiber laser systems, diffractive optics, nanofibers and optical waveguides, nonlinear optics, optical alignment, mechanical design, computer control of experiments, and automated data acquisition systems.

  Desired:

  Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following: + Excellent communication skills, written and oral. + Excellent collaboration skills for working in a team environment. + Experience with cold-atom atomic physics experiments. + Experience with atom interferometers + Experience with grating-mirror MOTs + Experience with nanofibers and optical waveguides + Experience with integrated photonics + Experience with laser and optical systems. + Experience with mechanical design, Solidworks, and machine tools (lathe, mill, drill press, etc.). + Experience with Mathematica, Matlab, and/or LabView. + Experience with data acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis. + Track record of successful research and development in atomic physics.

  The Physics-Based Microsystems Department leverages a diverse capability set to provide science and technology products to enhance Sandia's national security missions.   Security Clearance:

  Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
