  University of Cologne

  Cologne, Germany

The University of Cologne offers a wide range of scientific disciplines and internationally leading profile areas organized in six faculties. At the Faculty of Medicine 1,800 scientists are engaged in research, ranging from basic sciences to clinical application, as well as teaching and health care. Together with the University Hospital Cologne the faculty maintains 58 clinics, research institutes and centers. 3,400 enrolled students strive in this dynamic and innovative environment. The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Cologne are embedded in the scientifically highly active Rhine region. They have strong contacts to and alliances with the surrounding universities and non-university research institutions (e. g. Cologne MPI Ageing, MPI Metabolism, CECAD, etc.) guaranteeing excellence in research and teaching.

The Laboratory of Lymphocyte Signaling and Oncoproteome (PI Dr. Marco Herling) is seeking for an experienced

  Postdoctoral Scientist (f/m/x)

in basic and translational biomedical sciences (particularly in cancer biology and immunology). We seek for an above-average dedicated person with documented postdoctoral experience enabling her/him to lead a project group. The employment ideally starts in June 2019 and runs initially until May 2022 (WissZeitVG third-party funded project; 6 months probation), but candidates with a genuine long-term interest to pursue an academic career towards ‘Habilitation’ are desired for an envisioned prolongation. The host laboratory is affiliated with the local CECAD and the CMMC (PI Dr. M. Herling) and offers a versatile profile in competitive projects.

Our lab centers on the pathogenetic mechanisms in T-cell and B-cell lymphatic malignancies and their interventional exploitation. We focus on targetable molecular events of lymphocyte transformation and the evaluation of such pathway dependencies. As model diseases serve chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL). The advertised position is concerned broadly with overseeing many of our activities in T-PLL and more concisely deals with a project on an integrative ‘(epi)genome-to-drug-sensitivity-phenotype’ personalized medicine effort. The position assumes a key role on two novel EU-funded international consortia headed by the host laboratory. As systems, the work includes clinical and molecular profiling data, in-vitro models such as modified cell lines (incl. co-culture setups) and primary patient material, as well as gene- and disease defined mouse models.

  Your responsibilities will include:

  - Deep understanding on the molecular biology of T-cell neoplasms and their clinical needs

  - Independent conceptional design and in part at-bench execution of complex analyses in the areas of high-throughput (including epigenetic) profiling, gene regulatory networks, DNA-damage responses, protein biochemistry, cellular immunology, tumor-milieu interactions, mouse modeling

  - Bioinformatic integrative analysis of large-volume molecular profiling and drug sensitivity data

  - Participation in clinico-genomic-phenotypic database maintenance

  - Representation and drive of a central research project in an international network, including the management of multi-lateral collaborations (i.e. JAKSTAT-TARGET (Erapermed))

  - Mentoring and supervision of students of the assigned team

  - Proficient drafting of grants and manuscripts as well as of regulatory forms and communication

  Minimum qualifications:

  - Dr. rer. nat. / PhD or equivalent in life sciences

  - Documented experience in the fields of signaling, protein biochemistry, cellular immunology, genomics

  - Very good knowledge in English in (spoken and written)

  - Documented independent and published scientific work

  - Proof of practical leadership and mentorship experience

The holder of this position will receive an prolonged overlap introduction by her/his predecessor and will be supported by the PI, the lab coordinator (technician), other post-doc(s), and assigned students of all levels (PhD, PharmD, MD).
