  Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow

  Job Summary:

The laboratory of Dr. Jones Parker has an open position for a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Fellow for his new lab in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. The lab uses two-photon and miniaturized fluorescence microsopes and transgenic mice to image neural activity and transmission in deep-brain areas. The lab is particularly focused on the involvement of neural ensemble activity in striatum and prefrontal cortex in normal behavior and how altered activity in these brain areas may contribute to pathological behavior in mouse models for neuropsychiatric diseases. The lab’s work is motivated by the prospect of identifying novel treatments for these diseases, as seen here. The candidate will receive hands-on training in neural imaging approaches and the processing and analysis of the resulting large-scale imaging data. The candidate will contribute to an ongoing NIH-funded research project, but will also have ample opportunity to develop and pursue their own research questions. Postdoctoral fellows in the lab will take the lead on writing up papers using new and existing data, and will be encouraged to present their findings at meetings and to pursue independent fellowships, grants (e.g., K-awards), collaborations, or other activities pertaining to the candidates desired professional goals. The candidate should be interested in using systems neuroscience approaches to better understand the function of the brain and its dysfunction in neuropsychiatric diseases. Prior experience working with animals to do in vivo recordings or working with programming environments like MATLAB, or Python are highly desired, but not absolutely necessary. We welcome applications from diverse backgrounds who are highly motivated to acquire these skills.

Applicants should submit a cover letter detailing your research experience and fit for Dr. Parker’s lab, CV, 1–2 representative publications, and email addresses of three references. Applications should be emailed to Jones Parker, PhD, Assistant Professor, Northwestern University jones.parker@northwestern.edu. Review of applications will begin immediately (expected start date: Spring/Summer 2019).

Please note: The candidate must be willing to conduct experiments with animal, which can often require unconventional work schedules, like coming in on the weekends.

  Specific Responsibilities:

  • To conduct experiments that generate data and to analyze these data for publications and grant applications.

  • To write manuscripts from existing and new datasets.

  • To supervise students and other research assistants working in the lab.

  • To conduct new studies and write independent grants (e.g., K awards).

  Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Engineering, or Molecular and Cellular Biology, or related fields therein.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Has strong interpersonal skills.

  • Has strong writing skills.

  • Be highly motivated.

  • Can manage multiple tasks in an efficient, competent and productive manner.

  Can work with animals.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience doing animal surgeries.

  • Experience doing in vivo recordings.

  • Experience analyzing large-scale recordings of neural activity.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Experience with MATLAB, Python and R is a significant plus.
