  Background

  City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

  City attracts around 20,000 students (35% postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and staff from over 75 countries.

  In the last REF, City doubled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research.

  Led by President, Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university: it has recently agreed a new Vision & Strategy 2026.

  The Division of Optometry & Visual Sciences in the School of Health Sciences combines academic excellence at undergraduate and postgraduate level with a research-active body of academics and PhD students. It has a national and international reputation in applied vision research, and in the quality of the teaching provided by its renowned academic staff.

  The division is seeking to appoint a part time, 0.20% FTE Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Division of Optometry and Visual Science to carry out a research project funded by the Eleanor Peel trust entitled ‘’Caring for the carers-what support exists for caregivers of people who are visually impaired. An exploratory study.’’

  The project is a collaboration between City, University of London and the University of Manchester.

  Please note this role has funding for 15 months and the starting salary will be £7,469 per annum (pro rata of £37,345).

  Responsibilities

  The research fellow post provides a unique opportunity to work on an exciting study in the field of visual impairment under the supervision of Dr Ahalya Subramanian and Professor Christine Dickinson. The successful candidate will conduct qualitative research to explore the support available to caregivers of visually impaired people (VIP) and which type of support they find most useful. They will also investigate whether health care professionals involved in the care of VIP are aware of caregiver burden and provide appropriate support and referrals.

  Person Specification

  The successful candidate will possess a PhD in optometry or a related subject and have an excellent understanding of qualitative research tools and analysis. They will have the ability to write scientific reports and research papers, possess excellent communication and organisational skills, and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
