  Job Description

The Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) and the Division of NanoMedicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join a multi-disciplinary team exploring the health & safety impacts of emerging pollutants including electronic cigarette aerosol that contains nanoparticles. The main objective of the research is to identify the link between pollutant physicochemical properties and the biological and hazardous outcomes in tissue culture cells (in vitro) and in animal models (in vivo). We envisage a major impact of these emerging pollutants on modulation of the innate immune response, reticuloendothelial system and the lung.

Professors Yifang Zhu (FSPH) and Tian Xia (Division of Nanomedicine) are looking for a highly qualified Postdoctoral Researcher with keen interest in multidisciplinary research that involves engineering, biology, immunology, aerosol, and/or nanomaterial science. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn advanced techniques including advanced characterization methods, high throughput screening, live animal imaging, etc. The successful candidate needs to possess interdisciplinary skills and hands-on experience in conducting sample preparation, physicochemical characterization, in vitro and in vivo bioanalytical and biophysical characterization procedures, conducting cellular and animal studies based on a detailed understanding of pollutant properties. Postdoctoral researcher will assist in planning of experiments, methods development, data reduction, and manuscript preparation as part of this project.

This position is funded by a NHLBI grant. This position is available immediately and initial appointment will be 1 year. Appointment may be extended contingent upon performance and availability of funds. The salary (including full university benefits) is commensurate with experience and set by the University of California standard pay scales. In addition to research activities, the postdoc will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and participate in training activities.

Candidate must have completed their PhD in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Toxicology, or Immunology and have hands-on experience in aerosol sample preparation, physicochemical characterization and biological experimentation. Applicants who have already served more than 3 years as a Postdoctoral Researcher are not eligible to apply. Please forward curriculum vitae and 3 references to Profs. Yifang Zhu (yifang@ucla.edu) and Tian Xia (txia@ucla.edu).
