  Job Description

  We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct high-impact research as part of a diverse team that makes electronic devices using atomic precision advanced manufacturing. Are you passionate about conducting cutting-edge research to extend these capabilities? If so, you will want to consider applying for this exceptional opportunity. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Extend the capabilities of atomic precision advanced manufacturing by discovering new compatible and enabling semiconductor surface chemistries + Collaborate with a team seeking the theoretical and experimental understanding of novel surface chemistries, materials stacks, and device physics + Report discoveries to the broader community through writing papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals and making presentations at conferences

  Required:

  + PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related discipline + Experience performing original research, as demonstrated by a record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference papers, and presentations + Experience performing experiments involving the chemistry, physics, or engineering of surfaces, thin films, materials, or devices + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance

  Desired:

  + Experience with wet-chemical and/or gas-phase surface chemistries + Experience working with, modifying, and building ultra-high vacuum systems + Experience with surface science characterization techniques, such as FTIR, Raman, Auger, XPS, STM, etc. + Experience working within a larger multidisciplinary team + Ability to effectively communicate across disciplines, and levels of expertise

  Department Description:

  The Advanced Materials Sciences Department (1876) is responsible for the research, development, and application of chemical science to materials technologies critical to Sandia's missions. Our work currently emphasizes the science and engineering of Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD), and nanostructure synthesis and characterization. We support a large variety of compound semiconductor materials science and device development projects. We are also involved in the synthesis and characterization of other novel materials such as semiconductor quantum dots and quantum wires and 3D nanostructures including photonic lattices. We advance the state-of-the-art in MOCVD and related technologies through an interdisciplinary approach which includes a wide range of experimental and theoretical techniques and an extensive network of partners inside and outside of Sandia.

  Security Clearance:

  Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
