Starting Salary from £31,604 to £41,929 (Depending on experience) plus relocation allowance where appropriate. Initial 3 year fixed term contract (with possibility of up to 2 year extension).

Would you like to develop your scientific career in a research institute that is founded on the quality of its people, acknowledged for its collaborative environment and designed to promote the development of the most outstanding and dedicated scientists? Many early career researchers have already made that decision and at present over 100 of them are now benefiting from our excellent training programme.

The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute supports cutting edge research into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development and is one of the leading research institutes in Europe. The Institute provides an outstanding research environment, underpinned by state-of-the-art core services and advanced technologies, with special emphasis on imaging, metabolomics, and in vivo models.

Our innovative and ambitious research themes focus on understanding the regulation of the tumour microenvironment and cancer metabolism, in particular:

  •       Intrinsic cancer cell vulnerabilities

  •       Interplay between the tumour microenvironment, metastasis and recurrence

  •       Biology of early disease, aimed at developing a ‘Precision Prevention’ approach

The Tumour Cell Death group is a vibrant team which aims to understand how cell viability is controlled during tumour development and in response to cancer therapy. We focus on apoptosis and autophagy – two pathways that control cell viability – and we study both existing and novel factors controlling these pathways. We are interested in the basic molecular mechanisms of apoptosis and autophagy, coupled with the use of in vivo cancer models to understand the impact of these pathways on the establishment, maintenance and spread of cancer. Ultimately, our studies aim to provide insights to both improve existing clinical regimens and to identify novels targets for therapeutic intervention. (Key publications from the group include: Sakamaki et al. Mol. Cell 66(4):517-543; Long et al. Mol. Cell 50(3):394-406; Rosenfeldt et al. Nature 504(7479):296-300; Liu et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. (USA) 112(3): 773-8; Crighton et al. Cell 126(1): 121-134.

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field, be ambitious and be driven by scientific curiosity. Existing skills with regard to mammalian cell culture and molecular biology are desired and experience of immunology and/or in vivo cancer models would be an advantage, but is not essential.

To find out more about this unique opportunity to establish advanced skills and expertise in this exciting field please contact: Professor Kevin Ryan, k.ryan@beatson.gla.ac.uk

The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute is committed to increase the number of female scientists at this level and encourages female applicants to apply. We have recently introduced a highly attractive maternity policy which provides 12-18 months support and funding for postdocs wishing to take time off to spend with their children.

All applications must be made via our website at http://www.beatson.gla.ac.uk/careers/postdoctoral-fellows/.

Closing date for applications is 31st December 2018.
