The Athena SWAN Charter recognises work undertaken by institutions to advance gender equality. The College of Science is an Athena SWAN bronze award holder and is committed to addressing unequal gender representation across academia and professional and support functions.

  Main Purpose of the post

The Sêr Cymru II Program in Sustainable Advanced Materials (Sêr SAM) is funded by a combination of European Regional Development (through the Welsh European Funding Office), Welsh Government (the Office of the Chief Scientific Advisor to Wales) and internal university and College of Science support. The program spans the university forging new links to the emergent Department of Chemistry and Materials Engineering in the College of Engineering (SPECIFIC and the Sêr Solar program). The Sêr SAM program focuses on the development, understanding and applications of next generation sustainable advanced materials for applications such as solar energy, photodetection, sensing and bioelectronics. The program is also closely aligned to new initiatives in Integrative Semiconductor Materials being developed with the local semiconductor manufacturing industry.

The Sêr SAM program will deliver world leading, transformative research in the Grand Challenge area of Advanced Engineering and Materials, with significant overlap and complementarity in the sectors of Low Carbon, Energy and the Environment, and Life Sciences and Health. Building on the recent Sêr Cymru investment in allied areas (as demonstrated by the Advanced Engineering and Materials National Research Network) the Sêr SAM program will strengthen and provide significant added value through the development of high-level skills and Knowledge Transfer activities in optoelectronics and the emerging field of bioelectronics.

  Main Duties

  1.       Perform independent research on projects aligned to the Sêr SAM Program in the area of next generation optoelectronics, and specifically aligned to the Sêr Cymru II Rising Star project in Next Generation Semiconductors in Optoelectronics.

  2.       Develop experimental capabilities and infrastructure pursuant to the program.

  3.       Supervise research and graduate students on a daily operational basis, training and mentoring in the project area.

  4.       Take part in group meetings and internal seminar series.

  5.       Prepare thorough working plans showing activity, delivery of outputs and monitoring details for each project being proposed.

  6.       Prepare reports on a quarterly basis showing progress of specific activities, particularly collaborative projects, which make a contribution to the Sêr SAM Program against planned targets, outputs and finance.

  7.       Prepare, manage and submit journal publications in leading international journals describing research outputs and findings.

  8.       Present research findings at major national and international meetings, and represent the Sêr SAM Program on the broader scientific stage.

  9.       Identify and pursue registration of intellectual property where appropriate.

  10.   Support wider project development by contributing to grant applications, development of new collaborative relationships and propagation of new project ideas.

  11.   Carry out a range of duties at a strategic and technical level involving visiting other institutions, attendance at events, hosting visits and giving advice on activities of value to the project and / or the University.

  12.   Liaise within a small team of staff assisting with delivering the Sêr SAM Program reporting requirements and activities.

  13.   Carry out administrative and other duties commensurate with the post and funder requirements.

  14.   Maintain and enhance links with the professional institutions. A commitment to continuing professional development is mandatory.

  Personal Specification

  Essential criteria:

A degree in physics or electrical engineering AND

A PhD in Photonics, Lasers, Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, Quantum Optics, Optical Metrology, Optoelectronics, Solid-State Physics, Photo-physics.

Experience and knowledge of small signal detection, noise analysis, and general lab equipment, control and interfacing via Labview.

Demonstrated experience in establishing complex laser-based spectroscopic experiments.

Evidence of active engagement, personal role, and contribution to writing and publishing research papers in top tear peer reviewed international journals.

  Background

The College of Science at Swansea University is inviting applications from the highest quality early career researchers to fill a postdoctoral position in the field of optoelectronics and specifically:

Electro-optical Spectroscopic Methods for Next Generation Semiconductors

The successful applicant will join the new effort in “*Next Generation Semiconductors in Optoelectronics*” led by the recently appointed Sêr Cymru II Rising Star Fellow Dr Ardalan Armin. The candidate will work with multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers within the Sêr SAM program based in the Department of Physics, but with projects and collaborators across the university. The project will have access to outstanding research facilities including full device fabrication clean rooms and glove boxes, device characterisation suite, evaporator systems, dedicated surface analysis, spectroscopy and microscopy, fast photophysics, ellipsometry and spectrophotometry, scale-up printing and processing, and arguably one of the most complete and comprehensive transport and electrical spectroscopy facilities yet developed. This is an outstanding opportunity to help establish a major new effort in next generation advanced materials.
