  Location: Sutton Bonington

  Salary: £27,025 to £30,395 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £30,395 with relevant PhD).

  Applications are invited from research scientists for the above post in the School of Veterinary Medicine & Science. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist with an interest in molecular microbiology, antibiotic resistance and animal models of disease.

  The person appointed will undertake high quality research on a project investigating the use of viruses which infect bacteria (bacteriophages) to control pathogenic Escherichia coli infections as an alternative to antibiotic treatments. The project will involve the sequencing and analysis of bacteriophage and bacterial genomes, characterisation of bacteriophage replication in vitro, investigating the role and evolution of the CRISPR-Cas system in phage resistance, and animal models of bacteriophage therapy.

  This work is in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Copenhagen, University of Leuven, and the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), France as part of an European ERA-NET research programme. The applicant must be willing to spend some time on research visits to these European partner laboratories.

  Candidates should have or expect to obtain (thesis must be submitted or date of submission imminent) a PhD in molecular microbiology or a related subject. Experience in molecular biology and bioinformatics is essential. Experience of working with bacteriophages and next generation sequencing is desirable. Candidates must value teamwork and collaboration, have good administrative and interpersonal skills, and a high level of computer literacy.

  This is a fixed-term post available until 31 October 2019, hours of work are full-time however job share arrangements may be considered.
