Imperial College London - Dyson School of Design Engineering

Fixed Term 3 years

Job summary

A Post-Doctoral Research Associate is sought for the Design for retrofit in the built environment project with the Alan Turing Institute/Imperial College London. This post funded as part of the Alan Turing Institute - Lloyd's Register Foundation programme on Data-Centric Engineering.

Retrofit interventions represent a significant opportunity in the built environment that negate the need for substantial disruption to a community arising from a building project, and enable extension of the offset period for the original embodied energy associated with the first-build.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To establish protocols for retrofit with consideration being given to technical, economic, aesthetic, social, psychological and latent functions.
  • To review the reasons for the under-realisation of retro-fit potential across a series of building archetypes.
  • To investigate for a target set of retrofit interventions to illustrate retrofit opportunity and potential.

Essential requirements

  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent) Engineering, Architecture or Design in or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.
  • Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 -£34,040 per annum.
