Job Description
Do you have a passion for inorganic nanomaterials chemistry research? This position provides the opportunity to join a best-in-class team conducting leading-edge research in the Advanced Materials Lab (AML). On any given day, you may be called on to: + Conduct independent or collaborative research related to: inorganic precursors, ceramic nanomaterials, surface functionalization, and single crystal growth and analyses + Assist with maintenance of laboratory instrumentation + Engage in collaborative efforts between diverse groups within the department + Perform all work in compliance with applicable safety and security requirementsRequired:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in inorganic, solid-state, or materials chemistry + Experience with theory and practical use of handling of air sensitive materials (Glovebox and Schlenk line manipulations) + Experience in nanomaterials synthesis with an emphasis on solution routes + Experience in materials (chemical, physical, morphological) at the angstrom to bulk length scales and inorganic molecule characterization + Experience with materials characterization using X-ray based analytical tools (i.e., powder X-ray, single crystal structure solution, X-ray fluorescence) + Experience publishing and/or presenting research results

Department Description:
The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle “inks” and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Processing research and development includes; providing a “Direct Write” capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospinning of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to improve technologies such as solar energy conversion, printed electronics, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments. Our customers include all of Sandia’s mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States. Additionally, we are able to collaborate with a variety of world-class scientists that may not be U.S. citizens.

Security Clearance:
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
