Job Description
The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department is rapidly growing our research capabilities and we are looking for a researcher to join our dynamic team of professionals. We could use an extraordinary individual with a recent PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline with experience in the required criteria below. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Primarily focus efforts on research in the development of advanced power conversions systems and control methodologies for optimal operation of energy storage devices in grid-tied, microgrid, and off-grid environments; + Perform research will include silicon-based and wide band gap (WBG)-based PCS architectures, advanced topologies and laboratory capability development; + Utilize your experience with the integration of energy storage systems, especially advanced batteries.Required:
+ PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; + Strong publication record proven through journal and conference publications; + Strong software development skills that include experience in Matlab, Simulink, SimPowerSystems, and PLECS. Knowledge in other simulation platforms such as PSPICE and PSCAD is also a plus; + Experience in developing steady-state and dynamic simulations of power electronics and control; + Experience with high-frequency-link converters including DC-DC, DC-AC, and AC-DC converters.
Desired:
+ Understanding of basic open and close-loop control methods such as pulse width modulation and advanced controls; + Understanding of WBG devices such as SiC and GaN semiconductor switches; + Strong interest in the applications of power electronics plus energy storage for electric utility applications such as active and reactive power support; + Some understanding of energy storage technologies such as batteries, flywheels, electrochemical capacitors and SMES; + Experience in developing technical proposal preparations for new research topics; + Ability to understand grid interconnection issues of distributed energy systems; + Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal direction and with others in a collaborative teaming environment; + Excellent overall verbal and written communication skills.
Department Description:
The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department is focused on the development of advanced energy storage technologies and systems including development of low cost battery technologies, safety and reliability of energy storage systems, power electronics and power conversion systems, computational and analytical tools for efficient utilization of energy storage in the electricity infrastructure. The department manages several activities for the DOE related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects. We manage several activities for the DOE Energy Storage Program, including the development of methods and tools to evaluate the performance of storage systems, and methods for the optimal utilization of energy storage assets. The department works closely with several other groups in Materials Science, Power Sources, Power Systems, Renewable and Grid Systems, and Advanced Modeling. We also have active partnerships and collaborations with many in the electricity industry including electric utilities, product developers, universities and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in the electricity infrastructure.

Security Clearance:
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site.
