Research Associate in Bioinformatics

University College London - Department of Cancer Biology

 

The UCL Cancer Institute is part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and is the focus for cancer research at UCL: www.ucl.ac.uk/cancer Located in the heart of London, The cancer Institute provides laboratory space and state-of-the-art facilities for over 300 scientists to investigate fundamental aspects of cancer with the mission to develop new strategies to prevent, monitor and cure human cancer.

As part of this mission, the Glioma Cellular Genetics Resource (GCGR) headed by Professor Steven Pollard at Edinburgh University and Professor Simona Parrinello at UCL is seeking a Bioinformatician to develop a database and website for the integration, hosting and visualisation of the project data. GCGR is funded by CRUK’s Accelerator Program which encourages cross-institutional collaboration to accelerate translational cancer research.

Duties and responsibilities of the post holder include but are not limited to: develop a web site and database to host, visualize and serve the multi-dimensional data generated GCGR; consult and agree with the GCGR Steering group on the specs for the web site and database; perform computational analyses for dimensionality reduction, integration and visualization of the multi-dimensional GCGR data sets.

The post is funded for 6 months.

The successful applicant must have a PhD (or be studying towards it) in computer science or equivalent, demonstrate knowledge of programming, be experienced in dimensionality reduction of multi-dimensional data.

Competence in programming using R for data analysis, JavaScript for data visualization, Python for machine learning, Scala for distributed computing and C++ for software development, competence in Database & OS using Linux (Ubuntu, Centos) and Windows, MongoDB for No-SQL databases and json format data storage, PostgreSQL/MySQL for SQL-based databases and Hadoop/Hive/Spark for distributed computing and experience in using GSEA for integrative analysis are also Essential Criteria.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 - £31,967 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
