The Colour & Health Team of our New Cultivar Innovation science portfolio is seeking a Post-Doctoral Scientist to work on a New Zealand government-funded project aimed at improving phytochemical production in fruit flesh. Entitled ‘Regulation of the polyphenolic metabolic flux in Vaccinium berries’, the delivery of this project is expected to bring fundamental knowledge to New Zealand’s horticultural sector and benefits for human health and wellbeing. 

Working directly with research leaders in plant secondary metabolism, anthocyanin biosynthesis, fruit genomics and plant breeding technologies, your focus will be the genetics, regulation and biosynthesis of metabolites in berry skin and flesh over development, and the controlling factors in the polyphenolics pathway. You will make a significant contribution by analysing gene transcription and mapping the locations and rates of metabolite production in Vaccinium species. Specialist bioinformatics and metabolomics capabilities will be provided by Plant and Food Research and the University of Auckland. 

You will have a PhD in plant molecular biology, genetics, physiology or biochemistry and advanced technical skills in molecular biology, biochemistry or metabolite analysis together with proven ability in conducting research projects and preparing scientific papers for publication.
