　　Research Associate in Fermentation Process Modelling and Control

　　University College London - UCL Biochemical Engineering

　　The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7.

　　This post is funded as part of a prestigious, 5-year, £3.5M project (ConBioChem), which is supported by the BBSRC Industrial Biotechnology Catalyst Fund. The project involves collaboration with the Universities of Nottingham and Cambridge, and our industrial partners, Lucite International, Ingenza, Green Biologics, CHAIN Biotech and CPI.

　　The aim is to develop continuous bio-manufacturing of platform chemicals, using metabolically engineered microorganisms. Overall, the project seeks to solve a series of key problems relating to continuous bio-manufacturing: (1) genetic instability of metabolically engineered microorganisms; (2) low product concentrations; and (3) speed of translation from the lab to industrial chemicals manufacturing at scale. Research will be undertaken in a large collaborative team comprising 6 postdocs, 6 academics and a project manager at the three universities.

　　The UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering is one of the leading international centres for bioprocess research in the Industrial Biotechnology sector. It has excellent research facilities including a new £2.5M suite of synthetic biology and biocatalysis laboratories and a full-scale £25m bioprocessing pilot plant.

　　This Postdoctoral Research Associate position will address kinetic modelling and control of different fermentation processes and operating strategies. Specifically the work will address kinetic modelling and optimisation of the target fermentation processes and experimental verification. It will also involve the development of on-line monitoring and control options based on spectroscopic techniques and chemometric models. The post will require a high degree of interaction with project partners so excellent team-working and communication skills are required. The post holder will be responsible for undertaking original modelling and experimental work, reporting on project progress and the preparation and submission of research papers arising from these and related studies.

　　It is available immediately and is funded until 31st January 2022.

　　Candidates will be required to hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (Biochemical or Chemical Engineering) and ideally possess experience in one or more of the following areas: fermentation kinetic modelling, bioprocess control, continuous fermentation, on-line bioprocess monitoring. The post holder will report to Prof. Gary Lye.
