Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : The In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics (ICNM) Thrust in the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to work in areas at the intersection of experimental characterization, computational materials science, and data analytics. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform data processing, statistical analysis, image processing, electron microscopy, and/or small scale mechanical testing + Develop and lead new efforts in coupling experimental characterization (microscopy/small-scale testing) and computational modeling through integrated data analytics

Required:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline + Experience in implementation of applied data science and informatics + Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Experience processing and characterizing large data sets + Experience with statistical analysis + Experience with modeling or experimentation

Desired:
+ Experience in the following areas: Bayesian inference methods, Supervised learning, Computer vision, Machine Learning, Cluster analysis, Anomaly Detection, Neural networks, Data visualization, Dimensionality reduction, Uncertainty quantification, Pattern matching algorithms, or related fields. + Testing in a multitude of material systems, with emphasis on in-situ capabilities and an eagerness for technique development. + Strong background in electron microscopy and defect analysis. + Experience in using electron microscopy for high resolution imaging, diffraction analysis, and defect analysis. + Experience in small-scale mechanical testing + Experience in precession electron diffraction (PED) + Experience in ultra-fast or dynamic TEM development (DTEM) + Experience with fluid cell based TEM experiments. + Experience in programming + Strong theoretical knowledge base in thermodynamics and kinetics. + Ability to obtain a DOE clearance

Department Description:

The Nanostructure Physics department (01881) is one of two departments at Sandia that are a part of The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center operating as a national user facility devoted to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials. Through its core facility in Albuquerque and gateway facility at Los Alamos, CINT provides users from academia, industry, and government labs, open access to the tools and expertise needed to explore the continuum from scientific discovery to the integration of nanostructures into the micro- and macro world. CINT is an equal partnership between Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
