The Applied Materials Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee - Materials Science to conduct research in combustion synthesized materials for application in energy storage and catalysis. The candidate will design and carry out research involving the synthesis and application of combustion synthesized materials. The candidate will be responsible for post-processing and material characterization with significant participation in the combustion synthesis process with the goal of optimizing both the combustion synthesis and post-processing application requirements.

Position Requirements 

We expect a successful candidate to have:

  • A recent (0-2 years) Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering.
  • Direct experience with solid-state characterization techniques (XRD, SEM, TEM, PSA, BET, TGA).
  • Experience with solid-state or ceramic synthesis procedures.
  • Experience in handling air and moisture sensitive materials.
  • Good skills and organization in data processing, evaluation, and interpretation.
  • Ability to present reports at meetings or conferences and prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to be an excellent team player.
  • A high commitment to safety.

Additional desirable experience:

  • Prior experience in flame spray pyrolysis, spray pyrolysis, or plasma spray technology.
  • Prior experience in laser based diagnostic techniques.
  • Prior experience in combustion.
