　　Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the group of Dr Derek Macmillan, in the Department of Chemistry at the Bloomsbury Campus of University College London. This Leverhulme Trust-funded position is available working in the field of synthetic peptide chemistry and chemical biology. The project aims to develop new methods to enable the synthesis of constrained peptides via selective sidechain activation. The project will further aim to explore new approaches to rapidly confirm the successful formation of new molecular topologies, and to assess biological activity. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated group working at the interface of organic and biological chemistry.

　　The postholder will be required to design and execute efficient synthetic pathways to novel amino acid building blocks, incorporating them into model and target peptides. Linear peptide precursors will be activated and screened for formation of novel and desired molecular topologies. Formation of the desired topology will be confirmed using a suitable bioassay.

　　The post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust for 3 years initially, and is available as soon as possible.

　　The successful candidate must possess a strong background in organic chemistry with some specialization in amino acid and peptide chemistry. Knowledge and practical experience with basic cell biology would be ideal although some training can be given. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Organic Chemistry/ Chemical Biology or about to be awarded a PhD.

　　Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment w ill be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 - £31, 967 p.a. including London Allowance of £3,031 p.a.) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
