Postdoctoral Research Associate in Single-molecule Imaging and Single-cell Analysis of Bacterial DNA Repair and Mutagenesis : Oxford, United Kingdom

Salary: Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the interdisciplinary research group of Stephan Uphoff at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford. Our lab investigates mechanisms of DNA repair and mutagenesis in bacteria. To this end, we innovate novel experimental methods based on single-molecule and super-resolution microscopy, single-cell manipulation, microfluidics, flow cytometry, and whole genome sequencing (e.g. Science 351, 1094–1097, 2016; PNAS 110, 8063-8068, 2013; eLife e21763, 2017; Nature Comm 7, 12568, 2016).

The successful applicant will work on a project to understand how mutation rates are regulated through DNA damage and cellular stress responses. A particular focus will be on cell-to-cell heterogeneity in the DNA damage response and its impact on mutation rate variation. You will use cutting-edge microscopy techniques to track single DNA repair enzymes in live bacterial cells and to monitor DNA damage responses at the single-cell level. These approaches will be complemented by whole genome sequencing analysis. This project will also inform about the mechanisms by which bacterial stress responses contribute to the evolution of antibiotic resistance.

Applicants will have, or be in the process of completing a PhD in microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, genetics or related disciplines. Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary experimental research and a drive to learn new skills are essential for this position. Applicants with a biophysical background should have a proven track record in advanced fluorescence microscopy and/or microfluidic single-cell techniques. Applicants with a biology background should have expertise in whole genome sequencing. You should be able to demonstrate previous laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques, and be able to use computer code for quantitative data analysis. We expect the Research Associate to possess strong communication skills, including the ability to write publications and present data to the scientific community.

This full-time fixed-term post is funded by the Wellcome Trust for up to 3 years in the first instance.
