ORGANIZATION/LOCATION: The Pulse Crop Research Group at the Crop Development Centre (CDC), Department of Plant Sciences, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. The Pulse Crop Research Group at the University of Saskatchewan is unique in its scope and expertise in pulse crop research, and is home to one of the largest pulse crop (lentil, pea, chickpea, common bean, faba bean) breeding programs in the world.
RESEARCH AREA: This research project is focused on molecular host-pathogen interaction investigating the interaction of lentil with several pathogens of economic importance.
TERM: 2-year appointment as a postdoctoral fellow.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES: The successful candidate will be responsible for validating markers associated with resistance QTLs that have been developed elsewhere, will be involved in an intensive backcrossing program, develop efficient and reliable protocols for the molecular screening of backcross populations, coordinate and guide pathogenicity testing to complement molecular screening, and potential evaluation of advanced backcrosses in agronomic trials. The successful candidate will also be expected to collate, organize, systematically store and analyse data, prepare reports and eventually draft scientific manuscripts.
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates must hold a recent PhD (up to 2 years since award) in Plant Sciences or Biology, must have excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language, be highly motivated and be able to demonstrate an ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet milestones and achieve timely research outputs. This position requires a candidate with theoretical and hands-on experiences in bioinformatics including RNA-Seq data analysis as well as in RNA/DNA-based techniques (e.g. DNA & RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, DNA manipulation), and microscopic skills to complement molecular with phenotypic data. Candidates must possess strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.
