Postdoctoral Researcher in molecular biology : Stockholm, Sweden

Postdoctoral Researcher in molecular biology
Department of Medicine, Solna, Infectious Diseases Unit

Division
The Petter Brodin research group located at Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm is a part of the Unit of infectious diseases, Karolinska Institutet. The group develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the team is to understand immune systems variation in health and disease (Brodin et al, Cell 2015) and the regulatory mechanisms underlying such variation and adaptation to environmental influences. Another important focus is the development of immune systems in early life.

Duties
The current project will be focused on the development and application of modern sequencing techniques for mRNA-sequencing (SMART-seq2, STRT-seq, and the use of UMI for molecular counting), both in single-cells and bulk populations sorted by Flow cytometry. Also, the application of advanced sequencing-based epigenetic profiling (ATAC-seq, various bisulfite sequencing protocols) will be an important part of the project. The project will involve both the application of existing methods as the ones above, but also some method development.

Entry requirements
The successful candidate should have a PhD in the physical or life sciences. The successful candidate must be thriving in interdisciplinary environments, able and comfortable to work independently, being results oriented and able to meet deadlines. The candidate must have excellent communication skills in English. Experience of using multiple NGS applications is important, particularly state-of-the art mRNA-sequencing using different protocols (SMART-seq2, STRT-seq etc.), the use of UMIs for molecular counting, and epigenetic profiling by ATAC-seq. Experience of working with limited input material and even single-cells will be a strong merit. Familiarity with basic data analyses procedures and working with custom written computer scripts executed from the command line is important.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the following criteria:
- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
- Expressed interest in the Project
- Other documented experience relevant to the subject and planned project

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous
academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student
organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  5. Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is
scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.

Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
